To promote trade with India's NER region and strengthen its people to people contact, Bangladesh government opened an Assistant High Commission on Mars 24 for the first time such an iniative in Northeast India. It is important to note that Bangladesh and the states of Northeast India need each other for their economic growth. But still their trade relationship has not grown to tap the potentiality. Several hurdles are there on that path due to regional politics and extremism dominating the region. Thus, this new initiative can play a crucial role in developing these conflict ridden zones.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has warmly welcomed Kazi Muntashir Murshed, the new Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladeshat at Guwahati, the capital city of Assam. This is the fifth mission of Bangladesh in India after New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Agartala. Besides Assam, the new commission will be working with consular jurisdiction over Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland.
Recently, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his counterpart Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh also launched a new bus service for the region between Dhaka-Shilong-Guwahati.
